My Notting Hill: Karen Scofield

Karen Scofield Lucza

Following a sensational career in NYC, Karen Scofield created the boutique womenswear brand LUCZA, after searching high and low for the perfect trousers and comfortable yet chic transitional loungewear. Scofield has kindly let Notting Hill Gate readers in on her ever growing brand, her inspirations, and what she finds luxurious in life.

Can you introduce yourself to the NHG readers?

When I was in New York City I worked for US Open and the NFL in television production as well as special events. I came to London and began working for Comic Relief which translated to (RED), which Bono (U2 front man) started to raise funds for The Global Fund to fight aids. After leaving (RED) I decided to start LUCZA after looking for something I could throw on after work that was smart and sophisticated but also relaxed. After extensive market research, I came to the conclusion that there was a gap in the market for luxurious relaxed-chic pieces.   Our LUCZA pieces always meet four requirements; luxurious fabrics, meticulous cut for flattering fit, versatility (can be dressed up or down) and easy to wear.

Since you have spent time in both the states and London, what would you think the biggest style differences are?

I think the English are more adventurous with their style and very confident, whereas the Americans are more traditional, classic and tend to be a little safe.

Many high profile women have been seen wearing your brand, can you describe the LUCZA woman in one sentence?

The LUCZA woman is someone who is confident and knows her style and taste, is not afraid of fashion and can put looks together that are chic and sophisticated.

The black trousers in the AW11 collection were inspired by Audrey Hepburn, do you have any style figures of your own?

I’m a fan of classic style, so my style figures would be women such as Audrey Hepburn, Carlolyn Bessette and Marella Agnelli.  They all looked great in simple pieces such as a tunic dress or  skinny trousers and a sweater.   l like to look smart but also effortless, the clothes should not wear you.

LUCZA is based upon feeling luxurious yet relaxed. What are a few of your other favourite comforts in life?

Nothing is more luxurious than time.  So downtime with family and friends is true luxury.  I also do love scented candles, a glass of red wine and a fire in the fireplace.

Christmas is quickly approaching, what would be the perfect LUCZA gift?

The perfect gift would definitely be the silk trousers with the silk camisole top and a cashmere jumper. Again, take the trousers and dress them up with the camisole and you can be chic at home. I love the monochrome look of grey on grey or the cream silk with cream cashmere.

What do you see as the next step for the LUCZA brand?

Since we launched in April 2011, the brand is growing organically. Not being able to find certain things, or looking for classic black trousers to wear everyday definitely had a market. A lot of the women buying the collection are wearing the pieces out and dressing them up for dinner parties or wearing the tops with jeans or heels and trousers. It started off as lux at-home wear, and for SS12 we have really lovely dresses coming out. They can be dressed up and down, worn with flats or with heels. I hope to expand in the UK and overseas as we already have a growing fan base in Asia and the US.

Shoppers can find the LUCZA collection at 113A Portobello Road, London, W11 2QB or shop online at Lucza.
